How I prepared for the “Flats and Handwashing Challenge” and how much I spent!

Flay and handwashing supplies

Part of the Flats and Handwashing Challenge is using only flats. Flats are basically defined as an approximately 30″ X 30″ square piece of absorbent fabric that is flat (unsewn except for possible hemmed edges). Typically, flats are also one layer of fabric. The type of fabric varies. Many moms use birdseye, flannel, cotton, muslin, flour sack towels or terry cloth. I am going to do a simple list of what I am using this week for the challenge, including what I’m using to wash them! Here goes:

  • 12 left over receiving blankets from the Toddler. They are pink and we don’t use them much for our baby boy (I couldn’t toss them and knew I would find a way to repurpose them!) ~ FREE
  • 4 Diaper covers I already owned. One from Zookies Crafts that was clearanced for $5, two covers from Rebel Cloth (one was a review for this blog (free) the other in a bundle from Bundles and Buzz value approximately $12) and one GroVia Shell I bought for $16. Total spent on covers: $33

May purchase this week for a temporary washing tub (currently using my sink, washing as they come):

  • One 5 gallon bucket (hardware store) ~ $3
  • One bucket lid (hardware store) ~ $1
  • Simple plunger (hardware store) ~ $4 ( you could take the handle from your broom and screw it into the plunger head if you get the right plunger! Easier on your back!)
  • Dirty Diaper Laundry has a great video on how to construct the washer as well as some upgrades you can make to it!

Total cost of diapering and washing for one week is: $41! This is including some items I already owned but here is a list of places to get them super cheap:

Target or Walmart:

  • Flour Sack Towels
  • Receiving blankets
  • Wash cloths to be used as baby wipes

Thrift store:

  • Bucket
  • Lid
  • T-shirts to make flats from! See Dirty Diaper Laundry for that one too!
  • Receiving blankets

Do you have any great finds for items to use in this challenge? I would love to hear your suggestions!
