Blogger Help: Pitching for your blog

October 2, 2012

I am no expert in public relations or any other type of media outreach. All I can do is speak from my own experiences. I had a blog before this one that grew too quickly for me to handle. Which is one of the reasons why I started this one.

I have been pitching companies for over a year. At first it was not pretty. My first attempt was for a holiday giveaway which I made the mistake of sending one single, mass email. I made one email and put all of the companies addresses in the “to” box. I got one response. Which fell through anyway!

My biggest suggestion for creating a pitch is to make it personal. Connect with the company by relating to the product. If it is something you have never used, express interest in it! Use the company’s name! If you are able to find the name of the person who will be receiving your email, use it by saying “Hi Sandra,”. And send each company a personalized email! This will set you apart from all the other “robotic” or “cookie cutter” emails they get! They get a ton!

More than likely they are not going to open any attachments (unless they are really interested). Send a link to any content instead, it’s easier for them. They do not have a lot of time to read the details. My opinion is that they only skim emails looking for keywords! If they see something that makes them slow down or look back and reread, then they might check out your links! This is also why I suggest keeping it short.

Hitting just the main points will get you better results than a long-winded pitch. If they like what your blog is about, the event you are pitching for or even just the tone of your professionalism then they will respond asking for more details or your stats.

These are actual pitches I send out! Copied from my sent mail! Pretty please only use them as a template. Please don’t copy them word for word. We don’t want any “cookie cutter” emails 🙂 Good Luck!

This is for my maternity event you can replace with any event name and description:

Subject line: Maternity/Nursing Event PR Opportunity

Hi there! [I didn’t find a contact name]

My name is Melissa, I am the owner/author of the blog Teen Toddler Newborn. I am also the mom of 2 girls and we are expecting again! Teen Toddler Newborn brings product reviews, recipes, crafts and tips on living a greener lifestyle to moms and families. The goal is to make moms’ lives easier, less stressed and healthier! [brief explanation of my blog]

I would love the opportunity to showcase Baby Be Mine Maternity [Use the company’s name!] in our first maternity giveaway event! Most of my product reviews include a video [possibly a keyword that will catch attention]  that is uploaded on youtube as well as embedded in the blog post.[asking them to participate]

The event, “Blissful Bump Giveaway Bash” will feature Maternity and nursing items for moms-to-be, postpartum and possibly even daddy-to-be items. I have also recruited 5 other blogs to Co-host this event. The co-hosts will share the giveaway with photos and links to Teen Toddler Newborn’s review. Readers will read reviews, by us, for our favorite maternity/postpartum/nursing items and then enter to win them! [event details]

Review items will be accepted until mid October for the event to begin on November 1. This event is sure to bring in new fans and followers for all parties involved! [other info like dates, link to announcement post, etc]

Thank you so much for your time and consideration. I look forward to seeing what you think of my offer! [Thank and invite to respond]

For a stand alone review/giveaway this is what I say:

Subject line: Paperless Kitchen featured on [blog name] OR Blog PR Opportunity with [blog name]

Hi There!

I would love the opportunity to showcase PaperlessKitchen [Company name! make it personal] in one of our first “Green Home” reviews! And possibly hold a giveaway for my readers. Most of my product reviews include a video that is uploaded on youtube as well as embedded in the blog post. To get PaperlessKitchen more exposure, beyond the review, I would also offer ad placement for 6 months as a thank you for sponsoring. [asking to review product, since it’s a new blog with a lack of stats, I offered ad space]

I am particularly interested in the E-Cloth Screen Cleaning Pack,ECO Lunch Box 3-in-one set, or PaperlessKitchen Skoy Cloth 4 pack. [showing that you are familiar with their site/products]

Thank you so much for your time and consideration. I look forward to seeing what you think of my offer! [thank and invite to respond]

You may get some “no” responses. Usually if they aren’t interested they don’t have the time to respond at all. Sometimes your email will go to spam! Personally, if I have pitched a company that I REALLY wanted to work with or felt that they would benefit greatly from working with me, I will contact them on Facebook or Twitter. I just leave a nice comment that says “Hi! I just wanted to see if you got my email last week. I would love to have you join our big blog event!” Some companies I have worked with were contacted this way and my email was found in spam!

I hope you find this helpful in getting some products to share with your readers! If you see any errors or have any suggestions or questions please don’t hesitate to leave a comment or email me!
